It just feels that way, because you can gauge how good you are/aren't doing objectively now... whereas before you were daunted by the gigantic size of the maps, and came in with the predisposition that you would do badly.
In the same way that many up-and-coming Sparkers think they should be on top ten lists... then they battle Mage in a pub go and are made uncomfortably aware of their shortcomings.
Keep racing... you're getting better whether you know it or not ;)
